1952 Sociedad Numismatica de Mexico Membership Medal
Welcome …
to the only online digital magazine designed and developed just for and
by Mexican coin collectors! This web site is for all of you out there that
might be just a little crazy, at least when it comes to the coins
and history of Mexico. Good news! We understand your attraction to these
wonderful coins that can trace the history of the New World from Hernando Cortez
to the present day, because the designers of this web site are just as crazy
about Monedas Mexicanas as your are! And be sure to tell your friends and
other Mexican coin collectors about our
Mexican Coin Magic web site.
We began our
publication by concentrating a lot of attention on the Republican Period’s ocho reales (8 Reales) and ocho escudos(8 Escudos).
But we are now
trying to cover the entire spectrum of every series of
Mexican coins from the earliest Maravedis through the 20th Century.
However, we had to start somewhere, and since we have some small knowledge
about these two series, here goes. In the beginning each new issue had 14
distinctive sections or columns, this was done in order to try to make your life
of collecting slightly less hectic, more enjoyable and because we want you to be
able to easily locate reliable sources of information and data that can provide you with
interesting and accurate facts about the coins you collect. Each new issue
will contain information about new varieties, other collectors sharing your
interests, the coins you need and/or want, good books and important catalogs for
your library and last but not least, the latest news about our mutual
obsession.
It is our hope and desire that this
website-magazine will become a worldwide meeting place. A productive
resource for the many collectors
and historians interested in Mexico, especially those who want to share what they have
learned with other collectors and numismatists. We have committed ourselves to
making this site attractive, informative, and controversial while publicly
sharing important information related to Mexican coins with you … the collector.
Below you will find a list of our current columns/sections, but remember we
hope to add new ones over the years.
Each new issue of
Mexican Coin Magic will contain new material in every column/section. We
began by trying to publish five issues every year, but
after a while we realized that was almost impossible with our limited resources.
Hopefully others will decide that our publication is worthy and begin to help by
writing an article or two a year. We would like to keep new issues coming at a
rate of four per year. If you have something interesting to say about Mexican
coins, we welcome any and all story lines and articles, just let us know when
you are ready to publish.
To go to any
column/segment just click on the [X]
box. Beware ... if you are
using a dial up Internet connection some articles or sections on our website may take several minutes to load,
be patient because it is worth the wait!
Please remember to register on the
Mexican Coin Magic Web Site @
The Collector Registry Form [14] so we
may contact you when new items are published, and so other
collectors, if you wish, may contact you when they have something that might
interest you. Here is an index of what you will find in each issue:

The Soap Box ... in the Park:
Is an open forum for all collectors to bring up points that need attention or
that need to be corrected in our world of Mexican Numismatics. Here we will try
to cover many different questions facing collectors and dealers and we expect
this column to be somewhat controversial because there are some weighted
questions that need to be resolved in our little world. Originally this
was also a place for questions and answers, but because of the volume of
questions we received on our first foray into websites, oh so many months ago,
we decided we needed to devote a new column! The Mexican Coin Answer Man will
now handle the questions about specific Mexican Coins. What you will
now see and read here will be problems, maybe with solutions, brought
forth by our staff and guest writers. We also encourage articles by our readers
on new subjects, or items they have discovered. Remember suggestions are always
welcome.
Mexican Coin Facts & Figures: In this segment we
will begin with all currently know gold production tables for early Republic Gold
Production (1823 to 1873) from several different sources. Later we give you the gold and silver production
tables for other eras and other interesting tidbits of factional information or maybe even
fictional ones. The Mexican Coin Magic staff will also analyze
different mints coins, their dies, rarity, and provide you with items that you may not
know in this column about the Colonial, Republic and Modern Periods.
The Feature Article:
We begin this column with a series about a
New Unified Mexican Republic Numbering System.
A special three-month feature: First an Introduction and the reasons we need a
new dynamic numbering system for Mexican Coinage, then the Republican coinage tables
with the
actual numbers for each DAM (Date/Assayer/Mintmark).
[Escudos-V1-I2] Republican
Escudo Gold DAM Master List: This is the
latest listing of all known and reported Date/Assayer/Mintmarks (DAMs) for the
Silver Reales from the 8 Reales through the ½ Real and the Gold 8 Escudos through
the ½ Escudo coins.

Decimal Gold DAM Master List: The latest listing
of all known and reported Date/Assayer/Mintmark (DAMs) Decimal coins from the
Gold 20 Pesos through the 1 Peso and the Silver Coins from the 1 Peso through the

you can post photos of your coins or Mexican numismatic items to share and
compare with other collectors.
The Back Page: This column is for new unpublished
varieties, corrections to previous articles, and generally a catchall page that
will appear in most issues as needed. Sometimes we will just have some fun
with a few questions about your knowledge of certain Mexican coins.
The
Mexican Coin Magic Answer Man: Dave Busse and the other Mexican coin specialists
here try to answer all of our readers questions about individual coins they have
found or own. We will try to answer all your questions, but sometimes we
may have to throw out the questions to all of our readers, when we can't find an
answer.
