Hermosillo Ho 1879 JA 8 Reales (Hermosillo Dies 1876-1880) Dunigan & Parker in Resplandores say, “Common.  This coin is usually found Very Fine to Extremely Fine.  A number of Uncirculated specimens exist and probably came from the same hoard that gave us the 1880 coins. These coins were available in the early 1970s but have been absorbed and appear infrequently”.  Our coin is probably one of those hoard coins as it came from the infamous Joe Blieden Collection that was purchased by Private Treaty from Mike Dunigan in 1986.  This is a fully struck lightly toned uncommonly high quality coin has a few bag marks on the cap side and is Uncirculated. Though a Common date this coin is very desirable in this condition and was not in the Parker Sale!  Definitely one of the Finest Known for the date!

Oaxaca Ⓐ1859 AE 8 Reales (Oaxaca Dies 1859- Eagle of 1859-1860, Dunigan & Parker Date Plate Coin) Dunigan & Parker in Resplandores say, “Coins with the Die Style Eagle of 1859-1860 are rare.  Normally found about Very Fine and sometimes-quite crude.  A couple of well struck spectacular examples of the second type are known”.  Our coin exhibits the normally found die break, but as Dunigan said it is a spectacular strike for this date!  Parker’s coin was only a Fine and this specimen was the best coin known at the time, so was used as a Plate Coin for the book.  There are some minor adjustment marks on the Cap side and a smidgen of green at 11:00; I couldn’t bear to clean this coin, but the new owner can do it, if wanted?  I personally grade the coin almost Uncirculated, while others have disagreed, and call it Extra Fine+ with toning, by Private Treaty from Mike Dunigan in 1986.

Grading for this date and the Ⓐ 1862 FR is very difficult.  For actual wear, around Very Fine would be the condition.  Nice Extremely Fine examples are rare and highly desirable”.  Our coin exhibits considerable weakness on the Cap, the Eagle’s tail feathers, and the cactus.  It has some minor adjustment marks on the Eagle and cactus and a hard to see dig in the Rays at 11:00.  But it is still a nice frosty Uncirculated coin that Dunigan said was one of the Finest Known when he saw and selected the coin as the Resplandores Date Plate Coin, by Private Treaty from a U.S. collector in 1986.

Zacatecas Zs 1826/5 AZ 8 Reales (Zacatecas Dies 1825-1842, Dunigan & Parker Variety Plate Coin) Dunigan & Parker in Resplandores say, “This date is somewhat scarce. The overdate is Excessively Rare.  Usually found Fine to Very Fine. Extremely Fine examples are difficult to locate”. Our coin exhibits some weakness on the Eagle’s breast and the Cap, and looks like it was lightly cleaned many years ago, but is starting to re-tone somewhat unevenly on the Cap side.  It is still a very pleasing Extra Fine+ with a few field marks and worthy addition to any specialist’s collection as it was missing from the great Parker Collection!  Purchased from Mike Dunigan by Private Treaty in 1988, by the way Mike missed the OverDate when he sold me the coin.
