A Rare Opportunity for
Mexican Republic 8 Reales Collectors
In late 2001 while
attending a local coin show in San Antonio, Texas I met an
extraordinary gentleman who had a Guanajuato 8 Escudo I didn’t have in my
collection. I purchased it and gave him one of my cards
and asked him if he ever ran across any more nice Republican 8 Escudos I would
appreciate him giving me a call. He returned the favor
giving me his business card, which told me his primary business was
commercial insurance here in the Rio Grande Valley.
It was several months
before I ran into him again, this time at a local coin show in McAllen Texas. By then he
had accumulated a couple of Republic 8 Escudos, but I already
had them in my collection. We exchanged pleasantries and went on our separate
ways.
Several weeks later he
called telling me he had a high-grade Durango 8 Escudo that might
interest to me. He described the coin and I told him I didn’t
think I owned one. He said he was coming to South Padre Island on the following
Saturday and would I like to look at it? “Yes, for sure!” I replied.
On
Saturday morning he called and we made arrangements to meet that afternoon. While here he noticed I
was scanning some Zacatecas 8 Reales for the FoxLair 8 Reales Reference
Collection. This led us to discussing his collecting interests, which I found very
interesting.
He was an Ocho Reales
Collector! But he wasn’t the normal Type Collector. He was assembling a
complete Date Collection from the earliest dated Colonial 8 Reales through the
end of the series in 1897. He asked if he might look
at the Zacatecas 8 Reales I was scanning? Of course I told him, “Yes, I’m
pretty proud of my Zac’s.” Before the afternoon was finished he had selected a
small group of them in trade for the Durango 8 Escudo he had for me.
During our discussion
about the Ocho Reales I asked if he had ever seen the book Resplandores?
He answered, “No.” I showed him my work
copy of Resplandores with all of my notes; which Plate coins
were mine, the few errors and the many additions I had found since it was
published. He said, “I have to get one of these books!” I sold him one
of the extra copies I keep to introduce the book to other collectors.
Several weeks later he
called, “I have many questions about this book and I understand from one of
mutual friends you own one of the better collections of Republican 8 Reales in the
World. I would like to talk to you about buying some of your coins for my
collection. Is it possible for us to get together next Saturday?” I replied, “Yes, I’d love to.”
Thereafter we started meeting a
couple of times every month or so while his family enjoyed a day at the beach. He
made a list of what he wanted and believe me it was rather spectacular:

He wanted at least one 8 Reales from
each mint that made Republican 8 Reales.

He wanted only near Mint State examples
for each year, if
possible.

He wanted samples of an OverDate,
OverAssayer, Over Mintmark, and major errors
-
He wanted a sample of all the Major and
Minor Die Styles used in all of the mints
-
He wanted as many different assayers as
possible
-
He wanted at least one specimen from all of the
great collections from which I had purchased coins: Joe Blieden, Amon Carter, Pablo Gerber,
Scott Newhall, Norweb, The Singapore Collection, etc.
… But he wanted all of this with only a
single 8 Reales for each year from 1823 to 1897
It took weeks
planning
which coins he needed to fulfill his desires! Then we started the long process
of selecting the coins he wanted and needed from my 3,000 8 Reales. Soon the project
was into its second year and we still weren’t finished. Recently I hit a
snag, I needed a lot of cash; I
was ready to publish a couple of books, our website and my laptop died a violent
death. I needed my friend to pay for the coins he had selected for his
collection quickly.
My friend’s business has
been growing by leaps and bounds, forcing him to open and staff a second office,
thus making him short on cash. My friend’s and my cash flow problems can now
benefit discriminating 8 Reales collectors!
Following are 54 (1824 to
1874) 8 Reales this gentleman selected with his discriminating eye for
quality. This group of Mexican Republican 8 Reales took
me over 20 years to assemble. I feel sure most serious 8 Reales collectors
will find a coin or two, many even more, that are a perfect fit for their
collections. But all of these coins represent a-one-of-a-kind jewel, so
when they are gone ... there won’t be any more!
Later, if there is enough interest, I will scan and write-up the balance of the 8
Reales he selected from 1875 until 1897. If
